Government confirms plans to ban 084 and 087 numbers being used for customer service lines

Consumer Minister Jo Swinson has confirmed plans today to ban the use of 084 and 087 numbers for customer service and complaints lines.

Following consultations earlier in the year, the government have said they will no longer allow premium rate, 084 or 087 numbers to be used by airlines, train operators and major high street and online retailers.

The measures are being put in place to prevent companies from offering Freephone or low cost numbers to potential customers but then expecting them to pay more expensive call costs once they have purchased their product or service.

Here at 03NumberShop, we’re delighted with the news as it means that all businesses will have to provide a number that is more customer friendly.

For businesses who will be affected by the changes, we recommended migrating your 084 number to the equivalent 034 number as this will mean minimal changes to your number, yet you will provide a low-cost and mobile friendly number for your existing companies.
